Old Bone

Wandering along a coarse-grained, volcanic-black beach near Napier, North Island of New Zealand early one morning, I picked up this interesting-looking vertebrae bone. It’s picked clean and scoured white by the sea, worn along some edges and riddled with tiny holes and passages. Every detail, surface, ridge and plane has a purpose that can only be guessed at, but it comes together as a complex and interesting shape. A marine biologist tells me it’s probably from a dolphin. Whatever — it makes a great memento of a peaceful early-morning beach, half a world away: sea, sand, sun, sky — and space.
